Graduated Best All Round class of 1970 - RNZIR Inf Instr 2 Star. After grad selected for OCTU, employed at RF Depot and OCTU as drill & weapons instr (as an OCdt !!) until Jun 1971 when my peer civvy OCdt entrants had completed basic training. OCTU student until Jan 1972 then to OCS Portsea. Unfortunately, had to resign for family reasons mid year and RTNZ. Enlisted RNZAF Jul 1972 as Cpl General Service Instr at Wigram. 1972 to 1978 employed in a variety of Recruit, NCO and officer training appointments at the General Service Training School (Wigram), Command Training School (Wigram), Senior Instructor Airman Cadet School (Woodbourne) and Chief Instructor General Service Training School (by then GSTS had been relocated to Woodbourne). 1978 was selected as the first New Zealand NCO to attend advanced training at the NBC Warfare School at CFB Borden, Canada. Also appointed RNZAF adviser & instructor assessor for all drill, ceremonial, NBC and recruit training matters. Promoted to Warrant Officer in October 1983. Held appointments of Base or Squadron Warrant Officer (RSM equivalent) at RNZAF Shelly Bay, RNZAF Support Unit Singapore (RSAF Tengah), RNZAF Wigram and RNZAF Ohakea. Appointed Queen's Colour Warrant Officer for the RNZAF 1984-86. Retired from the RNZAF in Jan 1990 to take up a commissioned appointment with the Royal Australian Air Force Ground Defence Regiment. Instructional and staff appointments followed - Ground Defence & Fire Services GSO3 at Air Force Office in Canberra, Training Ops Officer at No1 Recruit Training Unit at RAAF Edinburgh, Base Police & Security Services Officer and the Base Ground Defence Officer at RAAF Williamtown, and finally Executive Officer of No3 Airfield Defence Squadron at RAAF Amberley. Retired (again!) from the RAAF end of 1997 to re-estab in NZ. 18 mths as Fraud Investigator for ACC in Greymouth (left town for sake of own 'health' !) Enlisted in Greymouth as Captain RNZIR with 2 Cant NMWC in Apr 1998, OC Log Coy / CSSG. RF contracts followed from May 1999. Deployments to Bougainville, Sinai and East Timor (UNMISET) from 1999-2003. Between times employed as GSO3 / JSO3 at LCOMD and HQ JFNZ for deployed ops in East Timor (INTERFET & UNTAET), Afghanistan, Cambodia, Laos, Bougainville, Solomons and Antarctica. Oct 2003 returned to 2 Cants NMWC, Bn HQ staff.
Back to the RF in Feb 2004 to 3 RTU as 2IC. Appointed OC (Major) 3 RTU/LSV Coy in May 04 (great job!). Dec 2005 deployed again to Timor-Leste as a Military Training Adviser with UNOTIL until mission ceased. Extended in Jun 06 for an additional 6 mths as an MLO with the new UN mission (UNMIT) – RTNZ Dec 06. Live in ChCh, unmarried, 2 x adult sons. It's been a busy life since grad! Email: idm@xtra.co.nz.
