After three years with 1st Armoured Regiment In 1954 I transferred to RNZAF. Trained as a pilot. Served as a transport pilot/flying instructor. Awarded Mention in Despatches for service in Malaya 1956/8. Awarded Air Force Cross in 1963 after 3 years as VIP Captain. 1969 joined RAAF and after a further 4 years as a pilot (9,200 hours+) transferred to the Air Defence branch. My promotions had a rocky ride. Upon joining the RNZAF I started off at the Initial Training School Taieri with the rank of Cadet Pilot. When I left after 14.75 years I had achieved Squadron Leader. Upon joining the RAAF I reverted to Flight Lieutenant with no seniority. Four years later on changing to Air Defence I lost my 4 years of seniority to find myself back to the bottom again. By the time I retired I had finally got back to Squadron Leader. I managed to be awarded 9 service medals including my AFC. Finally retired September 1986. Married to Ann for 47 years + 2 children and 2 grandsons. Son Neil, a Coalmining Engineer, recently graduated from Oxford University with an MBA to add to his BE (Mining). He now works for Rio Tinto Technical Services Division in the UK. winkelmann45@optus.net.com.au
