This is a Valentine tank that was used at Trentham Camp for assisting in the destruction of surplus WW2 anti-aircraft ammunition (stacked in the background). The shells were transported from the prison area to the area behind the rifle range, then destroyed by demolition charges. There used to be an old tank on the left hand side of the butts at the 300M range. We had the targets all ready, sitting on the bench, and heard the instructor give the order for the two warmers into the bank. Next thing we all found out what a flattened bullet sounds like when it goes past your head. It was lucky we were all leaning forward, elbows on knees. The butt controller had the flag up like a flash. The shoot was called off for the day and the next day the hulk was gone. The tank had been there a long time and had plenty of bullet marks on it. 

Hi Rob, 300m range, Waiouru, Home Valley. It was just an old rusting hull that had been there for years and most of the time you would hardly even notice it. There was no fuss made, they didn't even ask who had shot at the tank and it was not mentioned the next day when we returned to the range. I think the bosses wanted to keep it quiet. It was probably late 67 or early 68. I remember Tichborne was next to me but I can't remember who else was there. Hopefully one of the other readers will remember because most of the butt party would have been EME Cadets
